Marlee Walchuk

Actor, Singer, Songwriter, Painter

Born into a musical family whose older siblings, Judy Ginn and Jim Walchuk, were already establishing their own careers, music wasn’t a choice but a rite of passage. It was her debut performance at the age of 6 that propelled her into the spotlight singing, “Red Roses For a Blue Lady” with Wayne Newton at the famous Cave Supper Club in Vancouver, British Columbia, and where everything changed.

Raised on the music of her idols like Gladys Knight, Etta James, Bette Midler and Karen Carpenter, Marlee’s rich, contralto voice often lent itself to covering many male vocalists as well, such as Stevie Wonder, Peabo Bryson and Jeffrey Osborne. Early in her career she was a student at the legendary Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Los Angeles. “It was like living in the movie Fame,'' recalls Marlee, “an experience I will never forget, and incredible training I have called upon for my entire career.”

Her body of work spans over forty years performing in theatre, stage, film, television, and commercials. “My first love was film acting and now at this later stage in life I am actually a working actor and even landed my first Hallmark movie which was a full circle moment, watching it with my brother and sister.”

A member and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community she formed Sugarbeach along with her wife Nathalie. The duo earned 3 Pride in The Arts Awards including Favourite Group of the Year and were nominated for 5 OUTmusic Awards. Sugarbeach was also inducted into the GLBT Hall of Fame in the U.S. for their creation of RightOutTV and its Music Video Awards promoting other queer music artists worldwide.

As a solo artist, Marlee toured Germany 3 times and performed at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival following the release of her CD, One More Chance. Her followers may be older now but her younger audiences find her cool in a retro kind of way. Now success to her is more about making someone feel good through her music. “My dreams have shifted from wanting to be a ‘rock star’ to being able to do what I love until I drop. When someone tells me a song, I’ve written means something to them, that is the best reward.”

As a gifted painter, her life may resemble some of her artwork, colourful, dreamy, and full of adventure.   Her work is featured in many homes across Canada, the US and Australia. Her Etsy store is called MarleeImagines. Imagine that!

Liz Blair

Artist, Singer, Songwriter

When you think of a free spirit what comes to mind? Perhaps it’s the rebellious adult/child that never grew up or creative visionary that just goes with the flow. Liz Blair defines both and as a singer songwriter her willingness to reinvent herself everyday makes her a modern-day musical chameleon.

Born and raised in the small town of Cloverdale, British Columbia where the lush fields of green and back country are an open highway of dreams. “It wasn’t until I went to arts college and built up my confidence as a singer, that I realized this is what I wanted to pursue,” recalls Liz.

When you hear her sing, you are often reminded of the greats like Aretha Franklin and Christina Aguilera. Familiar yet always recreating, she walks the line between soul and blues, rock, and Jazz.  If you took Adele and Janis Joplin and they had a baby it would be me” said Liz in a jokingly way. She has the qualities that make her a great singer and as Franklin’s long-time producer Jerry Wexler said of Franklin that’s “head, heart and throat.”

When you meet Liz, she is boisterous, fun, and attentive. When she is performing her sense of timing and connection with the audience is intuitive. She draws you in like an arrow coming at you right between the eyes. It’s no wonder strong role models like Pink and Lady Gaga are huge influences. Like her idols Liz’s songs display strength, rawness and vulnerability underlined with a sense of compassion and positivity.

As free spirits often do, Liz’s travels have taken her to many parts of the world. From singing at the Chalabre en Sérénade in France to the writing rooms of Nashville and grungy bars of LA. She has played in many bands along the way including her namesake “The Liz Blair Project.” Her music reveals real life stories and are portrayed in songs like “Risen,” “Black Snake Moan,” “Sad Little Man” and “I Won’t be Forgotten” which have earned her many fans along the way. “Belting out a tune was easy from an early age” says Liz. “But watching people dance and feel good to my music is everything, there is no better rush!”
